Materials Engineer

Job Purpose:

To support the development and introduction of innovative, proprietary, market-leading polymeric/composite materials for a variety of industrial applications.

Provide ongoing chemical and material technical support for the organization.

Actively enhance the organization knowledge base in polymeric materials, processing and application.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive a “Safety First” approach in all aspects of the role, including laboratory practice & environment, materials and chemicals, waste management, equipment, test methods, and product design;
• Support the Materials Development Manager and cross functional teams as required;
• Collect and evaluate new product and technology ideas through the application of key fundamental scientific investigations and principles;
• Appraise new technology ideas to determine their potential to address application needs and to achieve goals in revenue growth and market share;
• Confer and interact directly with customers and suppliers, when appropriate, to ensure product and technology design meets requirements;
• Support material and product testing and research efforts including compound design, resulting in technologies that are manufactural and consistently meet and/or exceed customer expectations;
• Customer and Supplier visits as required.

Principal Accountabilities

• Ensure technology performance and qualification test parameters are followed appropriately;
• Determine testing needs; develop new or improved testing designs, methods and/or techniques;
• Utilise and adhere to company Quality System and Stage Gate design/development process for project management;
• Utilise Design of Experiments (DOE) and DMAIC methods;
• Deliver and communicate agreed upon results for major projects;
• Maintain technical documentation while following corporate policies;
• Ensure best practice, policies and procedures with the UK Technical Centre;
• Organize workflow and task schedules to maximize Technical Centre efficiency;
• Participate in the laboratory quality system activities such as internal audits, writing standard operating procedures, and documentation review;
• Record data from analyses or experiments in a computer, log book, or laboratory notebook;

• Learn and follow EHS policies, rules and work instructions.
• Attend required EHS training.
• Take personal responsibility for keeping yourself and your co-workers free from injury.
• Keep equipment in proper working condition.

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge


• Educated to Degree level or equivalent

Skills & Knowledge
• Strong track record of safety, creativity, innovation and prototyping methods to evaluate new concepts and materials;
• Fundamental understanding of chemistry aspects of materials’ properties;
• Understanding of design and manufacturing of polymeric materials;
• Apply appropriate engineering and mathematical techniques and concepts including statistical data analysis, test reliability, variance and correlation techniques;
• Understanding of engineering drawings and specification interpretation;
• Demonstrated communication skills, both verbally and written, with a wide variety of company personnel and others outside of the company;
• Excellent team working skills as well as initiative to work alone;
• Good numeracy and time management skills;
• Good facilitation skills;
• Pragmatic approach to project workload and experience of managing multiple projects simultaneously;
• Ability to use, apply and resource PC’s for business requirements;
• Willingness to continually learn and constructively challenge the status quo
