Design Coordinator/Engineer

My client is a leader in their industry and their team of nearly three hundred people operate from four UK production and warehouse centres. They deliver leading design and project management services and the organisation extends into seventeen countries, including China and the USA, where they deliver turnkey solutions to other global retailers.

Overview of Job
My client receives competitive tenders from their clients (which are main chain retailers) and these contain technical drawings. They are looking for someone to help process these enquiries for pricing within the supply chain and are looking for someone with a bias towards the technicalities of the drawings. They will be the first ‘eyes’ on the project to ascertain the suitability to the business. The output from the role will be collated information, which will be processed into a suitable format for pricing by the purchasing or manufacturing teams

Duties and Responsibilities
To analyse drawings and BOMs issued as part of tender documentation received and take the following action;
Highlight missing or incomplete detail and summarise back to the sales team or the client directly
Breakdown assemblies into sub-components according to their manufacturing discipline (wood, metal, plastics and glass)
Collate breakdown information and provide in a standard format for pricing
Assess existing manufacturing methods and compare against existing supply-chain and in-house production capabilities to evaluate any gaps

Assess quality and format of drawings regarding:
Ongoing manufacture
Present clear and concise summary information (in the form of excel spreadsheets) to purchasing and manufacturing work streams for pricing
Re-structure drawing packs to suit the format requirements of the business
Field technical questions from suppliers and factories
Pose questions back to client regarding technical queries raised as part of the technical review process
Be the owner of the technical information received as part of Tenders
Actively contribute to Tender review meetings and be prepared to present technical information to senior management
Form relationships with corresponding technical person/buyer on the client side

Experience and Knowledge
Understanding of typical detailing used in bespoke modular shelving systems and retail display equipment
Experience in reading drawings and being able to extract and compile BOM information
Understanding of the manufacturing processes of the following disciplines:
Mild steel fabricated assemblies and parts
Timber assemblies in MFMDF, MFC, Laminate, Real wood
Solid Surface (eg Corian, Hi-Macs, Wilson art) fabrication
Plastics – fabrication, injection moulding, vac-forming
Manipulation of drawing text in Adobe Acrobat DC , or AutoCAD

Personal Attributes and Education
Meticulous attention to detail
Ability to process large quantities of drawings and reference information (usually in the format of excel spreadsheet parts lists) in a short timeframe
Strong character, able to handle objections when working with information which may be devoid of detail
Able to work with the information received objectively whilst working under pressure

STEM subjects at A-level or a technical degree. Conversely, experience gained within the industry in a similar role will be considered.
