Claim 2019 as your year

A recent poll by global public opinion and data company, YouGov, revealed that only one in five people in the UK have made New Year’s Resolutions for 2019. If you take into account that only 27% of people who made New Year’s resolutions managed to keep them in 2018, we may be entering a new wave of personal improvement.

2019 is your year of 'I can'

Whatever it is that you want to achieve in 2019, whether it is to lose weight, save more money or find a new job, it is much more logical to approach it by being methodical, setting realistic targets and producing a plan to hit those targets.

Planning ahead

So, New Year’s resolutions aside, our advice to you if you have a 2019 goal is to pre-plan manageable steps. For example, if you are unhappy in your current job and want to move:

  1. Write a list of everything in that role that you really dislike.
  2. Then add another column to the list to show what you want from a new job
  3. Once you know what it is that you want, you can start to update and refine your CV. Add in new qualifications, experiences, and insights into your character
  4. Proof read your CV or get someone else to proof read it for you.
  5. Get in touch with your local Select office. Talk to them about what you want to achieve from moving jobs, and your recruitment consultant may have some suggestions of potential roles/industries.
  6. Send Select your CV.
  7. Start practicing your interview technique. Ask a friend to quiz you to get you feeling confident in yourself.
  8. Iron your best outfit.

These are the types of milestones that will help you get to your desired end point. Give yourself reasonable time frames to complete your tasks and you will feel accomplished every time you take a step towards your end goal, no matter what it is.

2019 is your year

So, dust the glitter off, pack away the tinsel and shake the New Year’s grogginess off. It’s down to you to make 2019 the best year you can.

Don’t bother with unachievable resolutions, set yourself up for success by really thinking about what steps will have a long-lasting, positive impact on your life.
