two minute interview with david walsh
Who are you?
I’m David Walsh, the owner of a Select Appointments franchise based in Croydon. We’re a recruitment business finding jobs for people and people for jobs thus giving us two distinct customer groups. We handle temporary and permanent roles across most commercial functions. Positions range from entry-level to senior manager in organisations of any size within both the public and private sectors.
What is your connection with the London Chamber of Commerce?
I’ve been a member of the Croydon Chamber (part of London Chamber) since 2005 and am now one of the local business representatives on its main committee.
What was your first job in London?
A media sales executive with News International, selling advertising space on The Times and Sunday Times.
Which one business achievement over the last 12 months are you most proud of, and why?
The establishment of a team with a winning chemistry. Ours is perhaps the definitive people business and even with the support provided by my franchisor, the Select Group, our local performance is entirely dependent on the efforts of my manager and her team.
“If there is one thing I hate about my job it’s….”
Unreliability. Specifically candidates who fail to turn up for interviews or even worse, change their minds about a job they’d already accepted on the day they were due to start. Yes, it happens!
If you were advising a young entrepreneur which business person would you suggest as a model?
Thus far I’ve spent the larger proportion of my working life as a corporate employee so my role models were generally corporate business chiefs. I’ve learned from them the importance of single-mindedness, integrity and a sense of humour.
How do you think the transport system in London can be improved?
From my motorist’s perspective, the congestion charge seems to be funding more buses which slow the general traffic flow; selfish maybe but there is a need for more balance. As a recruiter, I’d like to see a better orbital system that allows candidates to commute more easily across local boroughs.
What should be London’s response to the ongoing terrorist threat?
Obviously we all need to be that much more alert and I think the response from the security services thus far has generally been proportionate. However, London’s position in part can only be as secure as the border controls that are in place at ports and airports. That said; let’s not obstruct the easy movement of people and road transport across the Capital beyond that which is reasonable to help ensure our personal security.
Which piece of red tape causes most problems for your company and why?
More frustrating than problematic are the lengths we have to go to validate the identity, authenticity and eligibility of candidates to work in the UK. This can often slow down the process in what is a fast-moving sector but the need for vigilance and compliance with legislation is understood and accepted.
What do the 2012 Olympics mean to you and your business?
There will obviously be a significant staff recruitment drive to man the Village itself and the supporting infrastructure encompassing just about every job category. The Select Group will offer a comprehensive solution to the procurers and our franchise would then have the opportunity to source and supply staff from within our local catchment.
If you were Mayor of London for the day which one thing would you change?
Slash the cost of the tube’s basic fare of £4.00 which makes a one-stop journey possibly the most expensive in Europe.
Is there any question not asked which you would like to answer?
No, thank you.
