margaret declared one of the uk's top temps
May 2007
Margaret Whitworth, who retired from her permanent job after more than 40 years, but decided to continue working afterwards, has been voted one of the UK’s top temporary workers.
Margaret from Barton-le-Clay, South Bedfordshire, has been highly commended in the Agency Office Worker category in the One in a Million Award, the highlight of National Temporary Workers Week, which is being staged from June 4-8. The week is organised by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), the trade association for the UK’s £24.8 billion private recruitment and staffing industry.
Nominated by Select Appointments in Luton, Margaret registered with the agency in November 2001 after completing 41 years with her previous employer, an indication of her loyalty.
Since then, she has remained a “super temp” with Select. In the six and a half years she has spent with them, she has completed 43 separate assignments for just seven clients.
For the past two years, Margaret has been the candidate of choice for two organisations who value her special skills in taking the vital verbatim minutes at their meetings then having them typed, printed and distributed within the shortest of timescales.
As well as having a very rounded set of technical skills and personal qualities, she also reinforces the diversity of today’s society and is a shining example of why the age discrimination law has come so fully into force.
National Temporary Workers Week celebrates the contribution the UK’s 1.2 million strong temporary workforce makes to the economy and in keeping business on the move. It also highlights how working in a temporary, contract or interim suits increasing numbers of people in allowing them flexibility to work to suit their busy lifestyles.
Marcia Roberts, the REC’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We never cease to be amazed and inspired by our One in a Million finalists and their dedication to the work assignments they undertake. Margaret has proved beyond doubt that excellent office skills are still highly prized and it is wonderful that organisations in her area are now benefiting from her experience and expertise.”
