The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust was established in 1998 and provides integrated services across six sites, incorporating the Freeman Hospital, the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Newcastle General Hospital. It acts as a general hospital for a local population of around 500,000 and supplies a complete range of tertiary services to a population of around three million.
