A LUTON firm is now officially one of the best places to work in the country.

The Select Group, a nationwide recruitment consultancy based in Laporte Way, has yet again won a place in the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies To Work For as voted for by employees.

It came 44th, up 42 places on last year, and proved itself one of the country’s most forward-thinking employers.

Select marketing executive Sara Gant said staff and management were chuffed with the acknowledgement from the prestigious survey.

“We’re ecstatic. It’s just nice because internally we feel it’s a great place to work, but to get that recognition and go to the awards ceremony is absolutely fantastic,” she said.

“It’s not about marketing or putting a spin on things, it’s down to what people feel”.

The annual awards have been hailed as the biggest survey of workplace opinion and employee engagement in the UK.

This year, 868 organisations sought a place on the list and more than 180,000 workers were asked what they thought.

Richard Caseby, managing editor of the Sunday Times, said the survey was the definitive piece of research for companies aiming for best employment pratice, or anyone looking for somewhere to work where they will be treated and respected as individuals, rather than be perceived as anonymous cogs in a corporate machine.

Select, which began life in 1980, employs 348 people in almost 100 locations across the UK, was praised for making staff feel part of a team.

It got its highest scores for how workers felt about their colleagues – who all meet up at an annual conference in February to celebrate achievements – and earned an 84 per cent positive score for staff having fun with their workmates.

The firm also recognises effort through its rewards and recognition programme, which offers bonus and incentive schemes, and this was said to make staff feel they could make a valuable contribution to the success of the company.

Employees also enjoyed greater contact with directors, training and career development and benefits such as childcare vouchers, free private healthcare, subsidised sports, extra holidays and a contributory pension.

Select chief executive Diane Martyn said she was delighted employees felt so warmly about the group.

“We are in the fortunate position to make a difference to people’s lives every single day by helping them find a job,” she added.

“At Select, I am also dedicated to making a difference to our employees every single day by providing a great atmosphere”.
